Hotels in Lanzarote:
Cuisine The offering on
ranges from the most sophisticated international cuisine to
moderately priced tourist menus of remarkable quality. Canary
Island cooking is simple but tasty and healthy. A typical meal
might start with white cheese and a toasted maize gofio,
followed by a local variety of fresh fish, like Canary
Island gilthead (grilled or parboiled), grouper or red sea bream. This would be accompanied by "wrinkled" potatoes with
either green or hot mojo sauce, as well as a salad of locally-
grown tomatoes.
Those who prefer meat are advised to try the kid and the
wild rabbit. Canary Island bananas are just the thing for
dessert, and nothing goes better with a coffee than a
frangollo, a sweet made of milk and maize. The wine can only
be a Lanzarote, an appellation controlee that was granted
quite recently. El Grifo, Mozaga and La Era are the labels
most renowned for their quality, particularly when it comes to
white malmseys, which are suitable for aperitifs and for
accompanying fish.

Timanfaya
National Park Five thousand hectares of volcanic
landscape. The Mountains of Fire with their three hundred
craters, the Valley of Tranquility and the beaches of black
lava are just some of the sights of this unforgettable place.
Cave of Los Verdes This is only one section
of the complex network of underground galleries stretching for
over seven kilometres between the volcano La Corona and the
sea. One of the galleries has been turned into a concert hall.
Jameos del Agua A complex comprising caves,
volcanic bubbles and a subterranean lagoon, all cleverly and
artistically linked up in accordance with Cesar Manrique's
designs. One of the natural grottoes is now a concert hall
with perfect acoustics, while other are used as restaurants
and bars. There is also a museum of vulcanology.
El
Rio Lookout Point Cut into the sheer cliffs of Fariones
Point, the lookout platform offers views of the north of and
the island of La Graciosa, where Tasso situated the garden of
Armida.
Castle of San Jose A 17th-century
fortress converted into a Museum of Contemporary Art. Works by
Picasso, Mompo, Miro, Tapies, Millares and others. The
restaurant is highly recommended, both for its food and for
its views over Arrecife Harbour.
Cactus
Garden This garden in Guatiza, in the north of the
island, was also designed by Cesar Manrique, and contains
nearly one thousand five hundred species of cactus and a total
of almost ten thousand plants. Very interesting as well as
beautiful.
Cesar Manrique Foundation Cesar
Manrique's dream comes true. It was inaugurated in 1992, a few
months before his death. Those wishing to find out about the
artist and his work -especially painting- should also visit
his house, which stands on the black lava of Tahiche.
Castle of Guanapay At the top of an extinct
volcano with the spectacular views of the area.
